The report assesses how business activities contribute to deforestation
A report sponsored by the British government and a group of philanthropic foundations is developing a system for classifying companies by the impact of their activities on the preservation of forests. The Forest Footprint Disclosure assesses to what extent the companies control the production and consumption of their products that may be linked to deforestation.
Among the so-called forest risk commodities are leather, meat, palm oil, wood, and soybeans. In the first report of the program published on www.forestdisclosure.com, only 35 of 217 companies contacted disclosed their policies on acquisition of these products.
